The Downhill Spiral

Comparing Cities

Now that it has been established that Milwaukee is in fact segregated, and the reasons for that being so, how true is Reverend Jesse Jackson's proclamation that Milwaukee is the most segregated city in America?  The level of segregation in cities is determined based on their Dissimilarity Scores.  A perfectly integrated city would receive a dissimilarity score of 0, and a perfectly segregated city would receive a score of 100.  The dissimilarity score is usually based on the black-white ratio in the city, but it can also include other races. [8]

Professor, John Logan, at Brown University, and Professor, Brian Stults, at Florida State University set out to evaluate just how bad segregation was in United States' cities.  Based on the 2010 Census they ranked US cities by dissimilarity scores.  They determined that scores over 60 were extremely segregated.  They also created maps, which clearly show segregation in these cities.  The red dots represent Whites, blue dots represent Blacks, orange dots represent Hispanics, green dots represent Asians, and yellow dots represent Other. [9]

Logan and Stults determined that Detroit, Michigan was the most segregated city in America.  Detroit's inner city is made up of almost all Black with a small Hispanic population in the Southwest corner.  Whites reside in the outer suburbs of the city.  Detroit received a score of 79.6, well over the "extremely" segregated score of 60 that the professors set.  [9]

Milwaukee took a close second behind Detroit according to Logan and Stults.  The Blacks live in the North-Central area of Milwaukee, with Hispanics staying towards the Southern parts of the inner city, and like Detroit, the Whites reside in the outer suburbs.  Milwaukee also received a dissimilarity score of 79.6, but since 8 mile in Detroit shows a drastic divide between races, Detroit took first place. [9]  Based on Logan and Stults findings, Reverend Jackson wasn't too far off.

Following Milwaukee, New York, New York took third with a score of 79.1.  Newark, New Jersey was ranked fourth with a score of 78.0, and Chicago, Illinois placed fifth with a score of 75.9.  The maps below show segregation in each of these cities. [9]
